Unit 1 Number, Date and Time

Unit 1

Number

A Cardinal Number is a number that tells "how many" of something and also know as "counting numbers" there are, such as one, two, three, four, five.

An Ordinal Number is a number that tells the position of something in a list, such as 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th etc.

                            ตัวอย่าง  1  =  one ,  2 = two ,  3 = three เป็นต้น
                     1.2  ให้นักเรียนเลข Ordinal Number ตั้งแต่ 1-50 (ตัวเลขและภาษาอังกฤษ)
                            ตัวอย่าง  1 = first ,  2 = second ,  3 = third

Date

Telling Dates: We use ordinal number to tell dates by using "the" and we say "of" between date and month. Do not write -st/ -nd/ -rd/ -th  after dates.

 

1 January  =  the first of January

22 March  =  the twenty - second of March

17 October  =  the seventeen of October

Note: We use cardinal numbers for year by dividing the figures of year into two parts. The first two figures go together as the second one. 

1897  =   eighteen  ninety-seven

1987  =   nineteen  eighty - seven

1900  =   nineteen  hundred

2000  =   two  thousand

2005  =   two  thousand and five

Time

Saying the time: We use past (from 1 minute  to 29 minutes) and to (from 31 minutes to 59 minutes)

Example     1.  09:10  =  It's ten past nine.

                   2.  10.25  =  It's twenty-five past ten.

                   3.  06.40  =  It's twenty to seven.

                   4.  09.50  =  It's ten to ten. 

Note: For 30 minutes, we say half   and  for 15 and 45 minutes, we use a quarter.

Example     1. 10.30  =  It's half past ten.

                   2.  05.15 = It's a quarter past five.

                   3.  09.45 = It's a quarter to ten.
